I always knew I was a FIRST GENERATION Australian but knew very little of my parents background.
It wasn't until I turned 77 that I just started to get some understanding of my parents background.
Both of my parents were institutionalized in England in Dr. Barnardos Homes...I never knew that before and it explains a lot.
My father Donald L E Matthews was born about 1911, London Eng.
He sailed from Southhampton to Australia on the ship Balranald 1st July 1926. He was just 15 yrs old
My Mother Enid R M Dale born ABT 1914. Left St Barnardo's Homes, Stepney E London. 19th Apr 1928. Age 14 sailed on the ship Ballarat,
It would be nearly incomprehensible to understand the mixed emotions and associated trauma that they must of faced whilst enduring such a long arduous journey under very questionable conditions, especially given the fact that there was no normality in their lives other than what they had experienced in Barnardos Homes.
How they met I do not know, but with this background is it any wonder they could never adequately demonstrate love... Love - what is that ??
Dad must of walked out on the family when I was really young as I became institutionalized at age 6.
Dad was a violent man yet in spite of that I did admire his rugged handsome aspect.
Had I not had a Born Again experience at age 27 I would have continued likewise.
Born in 1936 before the commencement of the 2nd. World War I clearly remember the Searchlights, Sirens, Bomb Shelters, Aircraft and shutters on vehicle headlights.
World War Rations were readily available, food coupons were issued to families because of food rationing brought on because of the war. There was quite often a lot of swap and change of coupons with friends.
A days outing, bus, movies, lollies could be easily had for the princely sum of 5 cents
I recall clearly the whole school marched from Carlingford to Parramatta at the cessation ceremony and banged on anything available making as much noise as possible.
If you had a radio you had to pay an annual listeners licence fee. Some years later transistor radios, the first unattached portable mobile radio became available for which they eventually dropped the licence fee as they couldn't keep track of who owned them.
Television BLACK & WHITE became available around 1956 when I was 20 but very few could afford one. You also had to pay a licence fee and they had inspectors do the rounds.
Home phones were only for the elite, too expensive for the workers, so public phones were reasonably prolific.
Bread and Milk were home delivered by Horse and Cart and the Pie Man also did the rounds in like manner.
Women did not drive vehicles.
MOST married women were stay at home mothers so there were a lot of door to door salesmen from vacuum cleaners to clothing and everything in between. Catalogue buying was also extremely popular.
You could leave all your doors open whether house or car without worries of burglary or theft...how things have changed.
ELVIS was big then the BEATLES with their "long hair" freaked out all the parents.
It really was an age of innocence and Women breastfed in public as just the NATURAL thing to do.
The Nation carried in it an AWE and REVERANCE for GOD no doubt because of the Victory of World War 2.
These are just some of the progressions during the first 20yrs as I recall.
